Blasts the target with energy, dealing 575 to 665 Arcane damage. Each time you cast Arcane Blast, the casting time is reduced while mana cost is increased. Effect stacks up to 5 times and lasts 8 sec.

Erről van szó... :P

Quote:
So I've been having a lot of fun testing TBC, enjoying the look and feel of the new zones and the plethora of quests that are available in each zone, but the more I PvP with my mage, the more certain I feel that it's time for me to reroll another class when TBC goes live.

I first rolled my mage exclusively for PvP. I watched videos by all the greats - Pigvomit, Faxmonkey, Gegon, Zarthustra, etc., and I loved the way that the mage class rewards skill, experience, and most of all, fast decision-making ability. Being fragile yet agile, able to handle multiple opponents at the same time with quick hands, effective key-bindings, engineering gizmos and a little luck; I instantly decided that there was no class I'd rather play.

I took my mage to 60 within a few weeks and PvP'd for hours every day. When I found a players I couldn't beat, I watched the same PvP videos over and over, absorbing the experiences of other players and theorycrafting the duel in my head until I was finally able to win. I never ran from anyone in a BG or world PvP (never turn my flag off even though I play on a PvE server), and I developed a repertoire of tricks for fighting our worst matchup - Warlocks. I hit rank 12 within 4 months, made it 75% of the way to rank 13, then was forced to take an extended break from the grind for IRL reasons and gave up on making GM. Even though I could no longer rank up, I still made a point of looking for hard opponents, be they rogues in Naxxramas frost resist gear or AQ40-Naxx geared warlocks or HWL hunters, to improve myself.

Unfortunately, my experiences with the mage class thus far in TBC has been underwhelming. I'm not going to say that Mages are underpowered in group PvP - they're not. They are, however (IMO), close to winning a competition with Druids for the weakest individual class in any 1v1 matchup.

When I first rolled into the arenas, Hellfire/Zangarmarsh/Halaa and the Eye of the Storm, I found that the playstyle I had become accustomed to was no longer viable. So far, at level 67, I have not seen the massive increase in HP that many players anticipate in TBC. The recent Stam --> Spirit change hit all casters very hard, and personally I lost around 600 hp (being equipped almost entirely in TBC gear), but it hit Mages the hardest. Other than raw Stamina, we have no meaningful way to mitigate magical damage (unless you're 31 or more Frost) and physical damage has gone way, way up. Rogues are critting me with Ambush for 3.3k on average (well-geared level 67 rogues, that is), and Hunters are downright insane. My last unfortunate run-in with a hunter went something like this - I was trying out a deep fire spec, when he (MM specced) rolled up on me while I was capping the dranei ruins. He sent his pet at me while I was behind a pillar - I sheeped it and went for him. Arcane shot 2k, blink, scatter shot, multi-shot 2.2k, silencing shot 1.5k, autoshot 1.6k (he also raptor striked me with an ashkandhi for 1.5k in a later run-in). He dropped me like a rock, and even if I had gotten in close I probably would have died to a raptor strike unless I stayed in his dead zone flawlessly and burst down his ~7k hp.

If you think you're a glass cannon now, you'll be much, much more vulnerable in TBC. I had an SL lock hit me with a 430 per tick corruption. Add ~450ish pet strikes every few seconds to that, maybe some COA damage, and a death coil plus a shadowburn, and I hit the mat in 10 seconds before even scratching his HP. I've fared a little better with my usual 42 Frost / 16 Fire spec, but only a little - Ice barrier only provides about 100 hp more mitigation (though the lower cooldown is nice) and the WE can be useful in keeping people at range (when he's not banished or two-shotted), but in my experience, deep frost doesn't do enough damage to stay effective against classes that are capable of heavy burst DPS - rogues, hunters, locks, shaman, etc.

However, like I said before, mages are not underpowered in group PvP. You can be highly effective, especially as a deep fire build with harder hitting spells and longer range, tossing fireballs from behind cover in midfield or while attacking a tower/ruins. Deep frost doesn't hit as hard and doesn't have as much range hard-hitting AOE like DB and BW, so it's not nearly as well-suited to that style of play. Yeah, that hunter may auto-shot crit for 1.5k while plinking away near the flag, but I hit that hard on a non-crit fireball, and I can hide behind a rock outcrop or a meaty warrior and toss them all day - over time, I contribute more DPS in a group setting, but over the short duration of a 1v1 matchup, he puts out so much DPS within the span of a few seconds that it's almost impossible to survive.

What I'm getting at is that people who are looking for 1v1 balance are going to be disappointed. People who are looking for 1v1 viability are going to spec Frost and have to content themselves with being mediocre at best. If you enjoy being part of a team, and you don't mind being dependant on other people to keep you alive and protect you from, well, pretty much every other class, you'll enjoy playing your mage - popping combustion and a trinket and two-shotting some careless healer from inside an alcove can be loads of fun. It's just not as exciting for me.

I'm not fond of being on a team, I generally PUG and prefer 1v1 matchups. Until now, mages have been a very strong class 1v1. In TBC, from everything I've seen, that's going to change drastically. If you enjoy being part of a preformed team or can manage to work with everyday puggers without going insane, you'll probably still have fun being a mage in TBC. If you're like me and you don't want to run away when someone heads for you, or when you see a single defender at a node in AB / EotS, reroll - you'll be pursuing a playstyle that is more in line with what you're looking for. Undead SL Lock, here I come!

Unfortunately, I have to agree with most of what you've said.

Deep frost is simply not viable as an end-game PvP spec. It lacks the necessary oomph for grup PvP (the extra survivabillity is nice, but given your pathetic damage staying alive really isn't as important as it would be for a fire mage) and it falters badly in solo PvP. It's probably not ag reat raid spec either.

I do have a glimmer of hope, however, that I'd like to offer the mage community.

Earlier today I specced deep arcane just to play around. I went 51 arcane, 7 fire.

SLow is as lame as you think it is, dont' worry about slow. But the synnergy of Spell Power, Mind Mastery and Arcane Mind are excellent. Without using my trinkets or arcane power, I was arcane blasting for 1.2k damage and 2.3k crits. After 3 casts, they were only a 1.5 second cast. That's crazy good damage

SOme people might worry about the 400 mana cost, but with arcane mind, my mana was boosted to almost 10k mana so this was really not a significant cost. Really no different than casting frostbolts on my mage currently in terms of how many I could afford to cast -- except that I could fire off arcane blasts much faster.

But of course that was just my core damage. I found more reasons to enjoy the spec when I played around with arcane power. Granted its a 3 minute cooldown and I"ve never really liked that, but when you have 700 spell damage (my gear only has 580, the rest was from the talent) it really adds up nicely.

First thing I did was try an arcane powered, trinketted, Instant fireball with presence of mind. It crit for 3700 damage. So far so good. Then, just to be silly, I tried arcane missiles (which is uninterruptable). Hits were ~775 damage each. The crits would ahve been closer to the 1400 damage range. Again, VERY nice. Solid base damage (something horribly lacking in my deep frost build) coupled with extremely power burst damage options. I was very impressed with how the build handled itself in PvP and I suspect it would do well in PvE as well.

The fire talents I picked were Flamethrowing, for long range situations, and Impact. 10% chance to proc impact everytime I get hit on my molten armor was a happy combo, not to mention the occasional proc off fireblast. If I was going to redo this build, I'd probably sink an extra 5 points into fire for ignite. But I liked it very much. I'd also very much like to play with a 40 arcane/21 frost build when I get to level 70.

Even though I've always hated the idea of having my burst damage tied to a3 minute cooldown, it currently is with deep frost anyways. So I see no real reason not to embrace this. At least with arcane, I feel like theres really no need to use BOTH arcane Power and Presence of Mind. The damage I can get with just Arcane power on Arcane blast is so ridiculously good (1.5k hits, 3k crits on a 1.5 second cast) that I feel like I could save Presence of Mind for an emergency and never leave msyelf completely helpless.

Long story short, arcane, silly as it sounds, gave me hope that I might be able to continue to PvP with my mage at level 70. Deep frost, however, will continue to be my *LEVELING* spec of choice until I get to level 70.
